Differences between DOC, DOCG and IGT

If you have visited Rossini, or have had any Italian wine in your hands, you will have noticed the acronyms DOC, DOCG and IGT. These letters refer to the origin and quality of the wine you are consuming.

We explain the differences:

When you see this acronym on a bottle it means that you are going to consume a wine of the best possible quality. It is a very strict certification with the grape production process, controlled by a quality committee. Likewise, the strict controls mean that these are limited production wines.

DOC wines are those produced in certain regions of Italy and whose origin, production and quality are controlled. However, quality controls are not as stringent as in DOCG, and differ according to the region.

This acronym was created to group together those wines that did not quite meet the requirements to be part of DOCG or DOC, but which produced a wine of excellent quality.

Italian red wines

Red or black wine is distinguished mainly by its reddish color. This tonality is obtained thanks to the skins, the skin of the grape, which is left to macerate with the must.

Depending on the duration of the maceration, wines will change the intensity of color and flavor. For example, if the maceration is short, the result is a fruity, purple-colored wine. And, if the maceration is left longer, we obtain a robust, garnet-colored wine, ideal for storage and to increase its quality.

Brunello di Montalcino

Its name means "brown" in reference to its place of origin, Montalcino (DOCG). It is an elegant and dry wine, with notes of red fruits, vanilla and coffee.

Nero d'Avola

It is one of the most famous wines at international level (DOC). It has an intense red color, but with a soft cherry-like flavor. It is not an acid wine, so it goes great with everything.

Rosso Veneto

With an intense red color, this wine produced in the Veneto region (IGT), has a taste in the mouth that reminds us of red fruits, vanilla and cocoa.

Chianti

It is an exceptional wine produced in Tuscany (DOCG). It has an intense ruby red color obtained from Sangiovese grapes. It has a soft and velvety taste reminiscent of fruit.

Montepulciano D'Abruzzo

It is a wine with a ruby color with violet reflections. It has a fruity flavor and a dry end on the palate. It is produced in the Abruzzo region in central Italy.

Puglia

Puglia is the area where most wine is produced in Italy. It is a wine with an intense aroma and a purplish ruby color. In the mouth it is smooth and fruity.

Italian white wines

Unlike red wines, white wines lack maceration with skins and conserve an almost transparent golden color. Also, white wines are not usually aged for a long time, since the best time to consume them is after a year.

These are some of the best white wines that you can find in Rossini’s wine menu:
